Brussels Philharmonic, Vlaams Radiokoor

Beethoven 5

12 March 2020: the Brussels Philharmonic and the Vlaams Radiokoor are on stage at Flagey – a concert before an empty hall. The next day, 13 March, we all went into quarantine to call a halt to the coronavirus. The season came to an abrupt halt. 12 September 2020, half a year later. Both ensembles are back on stage. It will be a symbolic concert, the first since a long time with an audience. The Vlaams Radiokoor will provide the first notes, with the moving Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen by Gustav Mahler. One of his most beautiful songs, one that seeks to give voice to his suffering and ours. The Fifth stands as proof that music is universal. The four simple opening notes unleash a roller coaster of emotions, a heroic tale of triumph. Every phase of human existence is reviewed: happiness, drama, joy, tragedy – and a finale that sparkles triumphantly.
