Garrone drew the first storyboard of Pinocchio at the age of... 6. Since then, his themes have grown more violent (he took home the Palme d’Or for Gomorra). But he is not afraid to switch genres: 17 years after Benigni (who, after playing the title role in his earlier version, now takes up Gepetto’s woodworking tools), he conjures up a colourful, vibrant, magnificent version of Collodi’s fairy tale. The Italian critics were unanimous in their praise (five David di Donatello awards).
