Rodin

Jacques Doillon

Doillon traces Rodin’s life and career over 10 years: from the state commission for The Gates of Hell to the scandal caused by his Monument to Balzac, including, naturally, his tortured relationship with Camille Claudel. The artist’s villa in Meudon is the main setting, but this concern for authenticity in no way makes Rodin a semi-documentary: Lindon acts (powerfully), Doillon follows his intuitions, and at the heart of the film is a meditation on the genesis of masterpieces. A biopic, certainly, but also an exploration of the mysteries of the creative act.
