St Matthew Passion
Every year, when the first blossoms promise the reawakening of nature, the days grow longer and spring in is sight, Bach’s Passion according to St Matthew offers us an important moment for reflection and introspection. No one, since the first performance of the work in 1729, could remain indifferent to his interpretation of the sufferings of Christ and of the comfort he has brought (and continues to bring) to so many people. Bach himself cherished this work as one of his finest compositions; nine years after its premiere, he drafted a very precise and carefully written score in two colours. Today, more than three centuries after its composition, the work has lost nothing of its eloquence.
