About Frans Masereel

The Mu.ZEE (Museum of Fine Arts, Ostend) is holding a major retrospective exhibition of the graphic artist and woodcutter Frans Masereel until 3 September. Jérôme Laffont has made a lavishly researched biographical documentary about the great artist. With his wordless novels, Masereel could be thought of as a precursor of the Belgian comic. But his art and his life with its unexpected twists and turns have wider social, historical and artistic implications. Our film cycle allows us to revisit – with the kind permission of Lydia Chagoll – some of the films that Frans Buyens devoted to the pacifist artist.
