Arvo Pärt
The silence
Imbued with spirituality, harmonies and lingering sound, hypnotic repetitions, inviting contemplation, the music of Arvo Pärt has vertiginous depths interspersed with moments of solace.
Its deep expressiveness and aural texture compel listeners to project their subjective feelings onto the music, and it is this attribute that interests filmmakers: music to accompany their images without weighing them down with excessive meaning. To complement the Arvo Pärt weekend at Flagey, we will be screening films that use pre-existing works by the Baltic musician. Music with breathing space and intervals, lulling the listener into a state of meditative withdrawal. Silence, be it mystical, physical or mental, has itself inspired a good many filmmakers.
