Love under the crucifix

Ogin-sama | Kinuyo Tanaka

Ogin, the daughter of a tea master, is in love with a Catholic, and when a marriage more in keeping with her status is imposed on her, her husband’s jealousy provides the pretext for cruel reprisals. Sex and religion create insurmountable barriers in a rigidly hierarchical society, and it is the woman who is driven to a desperate act. Granted, we are in the 16th century, but the film conveys a timeless message.
