Collegium Vocale Gent

The St John Passion is Bach's first Passion oratorio, written soon after his appointment as Thomas cantor in Leipzig. He was thirty-eight when the music resounded during the vespers of Good Friday in 1724. The passion gives voice to Christ's suffering and death, and Bach's version is unprecedented. In terms of intensity, the more intimate St John Passion is in no way inferior to its 'big brother', the St Matthew Passion that he would write three years later.

UPDATE 25.04.22 | Due to illness, soprano Dorothee Mields will be replaced by Marie Luise Wernerburg.
