Lukas Sternath
Music runs through the veins of Austrian pianist Lukas Sternath. As a boy, he traveled the world with the Wiener Sängerknaben, and now he is a familiar presence at the Wiener Musikverein. Last season, he even was named “Rising Star” by the European Concert Hall Organisation (ECHO). At Flagey, Sternath presents a program full of sharp emotional contrasts. Combativeness and deep sorrow alternate in Franz Liszt’s Funérailles, a moving tribute to his friends who lost their lives during the failed Hungarian Revolution of 1849. In Schubert’s Piano Sonata No. 21, which would prove to be his last, contemplation prevails and the intense outbursts merge into an atmosphere of melancholy and stillness.
