Rio
Gaëlle Solal & Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie | #8
On the occasion of the release of her album RIO, Gaëlle Solal invites you to an anthology of premieres, celebrating one of the great musical traditions born in Rio de Janeiro. The journey begins with previously unpublished arrangements by the pianeiro Ernesto Nazareth, highlighting the fusion of classical and popular music. We then travel back to the 19th century with the long-overlooked Chiquinha Gonzaga, Brazil’s first female composer and conductor. Next, the strings take centre stage with Carlos Gomes, a friend of Chiquinha and the first Brazilian to achieve worldwide success with his operas. The programme continues with Heitor Villa-Lobos and the cadenza from his concerto, a true ode to the Amazon rainforest, before leaping into the 21st century with Clarice Assad and her vibrant, yet unjustly underappreciated concerto O Saci-Pererê.
