Flagey 75: Stravinsky “Pulcinella”, Ravel, Rachmaninov
“Pulcinella” was Stravinsky's discovery of the past, ‘the epiphany through which the whole of my late work became possible. It was a backward look, of course - the first of many love affairs in that direction - but it was a look in the mirror, too'. It was the last work that he conducted before his death, in 1967. Ravel finishes his Piano Concerto in 1930, also one of his last pieces, a virtuoso and brilliant score with a jazzy tint. The four movements of Rachmaninov’s second symphony form an endless stream of fabulously beautiful melodies, surrounded by sombre but rich harmonies that, like a smouldering fire, flare up in occasional bursts of flame.
