Cello recital

The boundaries between the sacred and the secular in music are sometimes very vague, even in purely instrumental works. Bach and Mendelssohn are both masters at allowing certain melodies to resound, sometimes with fire, sometimes more quietly as if in prayer. A beautiful example is the Adagio from Mendelssohn's Cello Sonata no. 2, which is reminiscent of both a chorale and a recitative from the opera. The lilting and meditative cello is carried by solemn arpeggios in the piano part, which give the whole a quasi-religious colour.
