Karski Quartet / Juri Heinsch

German Quartets

In the Quartet op. 13, Mendelssohn expresses his admiration for Beethoven. The key, the opening bars of the first movement and certain thematic contours are reminiscent of his great example's Opus 132. The final movement, in which he repeats themes from the previous movements, could also be a tribute to the finale of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. In short, the quartet is a masterpiece in which Mendelssohn shows himself a worthy heir to his famous predecessor.
