The Quartet. A mirror of Society?

One only needs to compare the musical scores by the composer Haydn to those of Bartok or Shostakovich to understand how composition can reflect the ‘zeitgeist’ of a society. From perceiving the quartet as a 3 + 1, to 4 equal partners, composers themselves, one could argue, embodied a shift from autocratic organisation through to democracy with all its consequences.
